Topaz - The difinitive Spanish opener! One of the coutry's foremost marching band writers brings you this sophisticated chart that's undoubtedly one of his best.
Tiger of San Pedro - "From well-known jazz writer John La Barbera, here is a hot version of his Latin/Jazz classic Tiger of San Pedro. The sizzling trumpet solo, percussion breaks and a solid "shout" chorus help make this one a standout. "
Malaguena - "Made famous by the Stan Kenton Orchestra and a favorite on the Drum Corps circuit for years, there simply isn't a more effective Latin number available! Jay's impressive production features a variety of styles and textures in a true tour de force off the line."

A BIG CONGRATULATIONS GOES OUT TO THE DEER VALLEY MARCHING BAND FOR THEIR SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE AT THE NAU BAND DAY.
On November 6th the Deer Valley Skyhawk Marching Band accomplished something it hasn’t done in 9 years. It received a rating of Superior as a Division 1 band. Division 1 is for bands of over 100 winds and percussion. Deer Valley attended the Northern Arizona University Band Day along with 39 other bands from Arizona and New Mexico. NAU Band day featured 40 bands (including every marching band from DVUSD) competing for ratings in 3 separate divisions. Included with the Superior Rating was recognition for special merit in the areas of Music, Visual, Percussion and Drum Majors. Ratings are just like grades in a school, 90% of the total points and above equals a Superior Rating. For more details about ratings, festivals and results please click here
Under the direction of David Duarte the band has grown to 130 members. Before David Duarte was hired as Director of Bands, there were numerous band director changes over the years. Until Mr. Duarte arrived in 2000 the only constant the Deer Valley Band program had was change. Since 1995 there have been 5 different directors appointed to the Deer Valley Band program and at one point the marching band was competing at the Division III level (65 winds and percussion or less). Much of the growth comes from great teachers like Bruce Bjorna at Desert Sky Middle School and Bill Patterson at Highland Lakes.
Just last month the band had learned that the Deer Valley Jazz Ensemble I was selected by the board of the Arizona Band and Orchestra Director’s Association to perform at the Arizona Music Educators Conference in January of 2005. DVHS is the second group in as many years from DVUSD to perform at the Conference. Just last year the Mountain Ridge Wind Ensemble was invited to perform.
